Spot trading

In one sentence

Buying or selling the actual asset for immediate settlement, with no leverage, no funding and no liquidation price.

In spot you own the coin. The worst case is that it falls in value; nobody can close the position for you. That single property makes spot the correct starting place, and often the correct ending place, for anyone whose view is measured in months rather than hours.

Spot costs are simply the spread plus maker or taker fees, which is why they are so much easier to compare across venues than derivative costs.

The mistake it causes: skipping spot entirely and learning on 20x perps, where ordinary volatility ends the account before any lesson lands.

The property that makes spot different

You own the asset. Nobody can close the position for you, there is no funding clock, and there is no liquidation price. The worst case is that the asset falls in value and you still hold it. That single property is why spot is the right starting place, and often the right ending place, for anyone whose view is measured in months.

Costs are simple enough to actually compare

CostTypical
Maker fee0% to 0.10%
Taker fee0.05% to 0.10%
SpreadUnpublished, varies by pair
WithdrawalFlat, set per network

Four items, two of them published. Compare that with a leveraged position where funding changes every eight hours and the maintenance requirement changes with size, and it becomes obvious why spot results are easier to predict.

Spot cannot short, and that is a feature

To profit from a fall you need margin, futures or a perpetual, each of which adds a liquidation price. Beginners who can only go long are structurally protected from the fastest way to lose everything. That is a limitation worth keeping for a while.

Owning on an exchange is not owning

A spot balance on a venue is a claim against that venue, not coins you control. The risk is not market risk, it is counterparty risk, and it has cost users everything more than once. Trade on an exchange; store elsewhere. See custodial versus non-custodial.

What to do with this

  • Learn mechanics in spot before touching anything leveraged.
  • Compare venues on all-in cost including withdrawal, not on the headline fee.
  • Move long-term holdings off the trading venue.

This term is explained in context in the primer - and the venues are compared in our crypto exchange reviews .
