Isolated margin fixes the liquidation price the moment you open and caps the damage at the margin you posted. Cross margin pushes liquidation much further away by lending the position your whole wallet - which is excellent until one bad trade takes the balance that was funding everything else.
Experienced desks use cross deliberately, with hedged books and strict total exposure limits. For anyone still learning, isolated is the mode that makes a mistake survivable.
The mistake it causes: leaving the default on cross, then discovering that "only risking $200" meant the entire account.
The difference in one table
| Isolated | Cross |
| What backs the position | Only assigned margin | Entire wallet balance |
| Liquidation price | Fixed at open | Moves constantly |
| Worst case | Lose that margin | Lose everything |
| Liquidation distance | Nearer | Much further |
| Suits | Learning, defined risk | Hedged books, experienced desks |
Why "further from liquidation" is not the same as "safer"
This is the trap. Cross margin genuinely does push the liquidation price further away, which feels safer and reads better on screen. What it does in exchange is remove the firewall: one position that goes badly wrong can consume the balance that was funding every other position, and the loss arrives all at once rather than in a contained amount you already agreed to.
Isolated caps the damage at the margin you posted. That cap is the entire point while you are still learning what a bad day looks like.
What cross is actually for
Running a hedged book where a loss on one leg is offset by a gain on another, so a single pool of margin is efficient. That is a real use case and it is not what a retail trader with one directional position is doing. Using cross for a single position is taking the downside of the mode without the reason for it.
Adding margin is not risk management
Topping up a losing isolated position converts it into something closer to cross, one transfer at a time. It increases the money exposed to an idea that is currently being disproven. If the plan did not say to add, adding is funding your own liquidation more slowly.
What to do with this
- Default to isolated until you have a specific reason not to, written down in advance.
- Check the mode before every trade. Venues remember the last setting, not your intention.
- Decide the margin per position the same way you decide any risk: as a fixed small share of the account.
