KYC

In one sentence

Know Your Customer - the identity verification a regulated venue must complete before you can trade, deposit or withdraw at full limits.

KYC is a regulatory obligation, not an exchange preference. Where it exists it usually brings the protections that come with regulation; where it is absent, so are they.

Practically, verify before you fund, not after. Accounts are most often frozen at the withdrawal step, when a venue asks for documents the user cannot supply - and jurisdiction restrictions discovered at that point are expensive.

The mistake it causes: depositing on a venue that does not accept your country, then finding out when trying to withdraw.

A legal obligation, not a preference

Where a venue is regulated, identity verification is required by law. Where it is absent, so is the regulation that would have demanded it, which means the protections you are implicitly trading away are the same ones you would want if something went wrong.

Verify before you fund, always

Accounts are most often frozen at the withdrawal step, which is the worst possible moment to discover a problem. The usual sequence is: deposit easily, trade freely, then hit a verification wall on the way out with documents you cannot supply or from a jurisdiction the venue does not accept.

Reverse the order. Complete verification and make one small test withdrawal before committing any meaningful amount.

Jurisdiction is the part people miss

A venue can be perfectly legitimate and still refuse your country. MEXC restricts the US, UK and Canada. Several forex brokers do not accept US residents at all. None of this appears prominently during signup, and all of it is enforceable at the withdrawal step.

What you are handing over

Government ID, proof of address, often a selfie or liveness check, and increasingly proof of source of funds for larger amounts. Every venue you verify with is another database holding your documents, and exchange data breaches have happened. That is a genuine argument for having fewer accounts rather than more.

What to do with this

  • Verify, then test-withdraw a small amount, then fund properly.
  • Check the restricted-country list before depositing, not after.
  • Keep the number of verified accounts to what you actually use.
