The all-in cost of a trade, counted properly
Spread, commission, swap, funding, slippage and withdrawal. Five of the six never appear on a statement.
Ask a beginner what a trade costs and you get one number: the fee. Ask the same question after a year of records and you get six, and the fee is rarely the largest.
The six costs, in the order they hit you
| Cost | When | Visible? |
|---|---|---|
| Spread | Entry and exit | No, it is inside the price |
| Commission | Entry and exit | Yes |
| Slippage | On fill | Only if you compare |
| Swap / funding | Every night or 8 hours | Buried in statements |
| Conversion | Funding the account | No |
| Withdrawal | Taking money out | Partly |
Only one of those is printed next to the order button. That is why traders consistently underestimate what they are paying, and why a strategy that works on paper fails live.
A worked example that changes decisions
Two forex accounts, same broker, same trade, one standard lot of EUR/USD:
| Account | Spread | Commission | All-in round trip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard, no commission | 2.0 pips measured | None | about $20 |
| Raw, with commission | 0.2 pips | $7 round turn | about $11 |
The account advertising zero commission is the expensive one, by 80%. Twenty round trips a month is $180 of difference, which is real money that has nothing to do with whether you are any good at trading.
Crypto has the same trap in a different shape
On a crypto exchange the published maker and taker rates look tiny. Then look at where people actually buy:
| Route | Cost | On $1,000 |
|---|---|---|
| Limit order (maker) | 0% to 0.10% | $0 to $2 |
| Market order (taker) | 0.05% to 0.10% | $1 to $2 |
| Instant-buy widget | 0.6% to 2.5% | $12 to $50 |
The easiest button on the screen costs up to fifty times the order book for the identical asset. That single habit, using the spot market instead of the instant-buy widget, is the largest saving available to a new crypto trader.
The costs that compound while you sleep
Swap in forex and funding in crypto perpetuals are charged for holding, not for trading. They are small per occurrence and relentless. A 0.01% funding rate paid three times a day annualises to about 11%; at 0.05% it is over 50%. Because funding is charged on position value rather than on margin, a leveraged position can pay its entire margin in funding within weeks while price does nothing at all.
Cost sensitivity depends on your holding period
- Scalping: spread and slippage dominate. A 2-pip spread against a 6-pip target is a third of the trade.
- Day trading: spread and commission, no overnight carry.
- Swing trading: swap and funding dominate. The spread is a rounding error over a week.
- Investing: withdrawal and conversion dominate, because you trade rarely.
Which means the right venue for one style is the wrong venue for another, and "best broker" without a style attached is a meaningless phrase.
What to do with this
- Work out your all-in cost at your real monthly volume, not per trade. Use the fee calculator.
- Compare spread plus commission, never one alone.
- Default to limit orders. Patience is the only free money in trading.
- If your target is smaller than three times the spread, change the target or change the venue.
